Setter entry footwork from each serve-receive formation is an important contributor to a setter’s potential success. We want her to get to the passing target location as efficiently and quickly as possible, allowing her to then see the pass and make the proper footwork moves from there.
We’ve broken down the proper setter footwork patterns for all six rotations to help you teach your setters how to be good in this area of the game.
Rotation 1
Typically from area 1 of the court, the setter will take three steps, starting with her right foot, and finish with two shuffle steps, before transitioning into the final “R-L-R” pattern.
Rotation 2
The setter’s body should be facing the antenna in area 2 while her head is looking at the server. After the serve, she takes four counter-clockwise steps, starting with her right foot, to get into the proper position.

Rotation 3 & 4
From area 4, the setter takes four long strides across the court, starting with her right leg. She turns her body clockwise while making her final two steps to face the passer in the backcourt.

Rotation 5 & 6
The setter should start these rotations in area two, slightly behind the passing target and slightly off the net. This allows her to move forward while preparing to set the ball.
